Things to Know Before Your Truro Move

Give movers a route that avoids the ring road and the station crossing

Truro’s layout funnels everything through a few narrow routes, and the level crossing by the station can drop several times an hour. If your movers approach from the wrong side, they can sit in queues and you lose fifteen minutes at a time while your booked hours tick away. The town-centre loop around Wood Street and Tregolls Road can also pull vans away from your road with no quick way back. Look at the map the day before and send your movers a simple route that reaches your home without crossing the station barrier or looping through the busiest junctions.

Keep your movers clear of Boscawen Street and the Lemon Quay restrictions

Boscawen Street now runs as 24 hour “no through traffic”, and the streets around Lemon Quay behave more like pedestrian zones than normal roads. Sat navs still try to send vehicles through them, but cameras and loading rules apply all day. If your movers follow the sat nav, they can end up facing a fine or a long diversion while you’re standing outside ready to go. The day before, check exactly which street a van can legally use near your home, then give movers a route that avoids the centre unless they are loading directly to a permitted point.

Check your parking signs early and apply for a dispensation if needed

Most inner Truro streets near Kenwyn, Hendra and Redannick sit inside residents’ permit zones, and wardens check them often. If the van arrives during restricted hours without visitor permits or a paid dispensation, it may have to move partway through loading, slowing the whole job. Read your street’s plates a day or two before the move so you know when a van can stay legally. If the restrictions run through your slot or the road is always packed, apply for a dispensation at least five working days ahead so the crew can stay put until the job is done.

Don’t rely on Moorfield or multi storeys for the movers’ van

Moorfield’s upper floors are closed and the remaining spaces fill quickly. High Cross and Lemon Quay multi storeys have height limits that most moving vans cannot clear. If your movers head there to wait, they risk hitting a barrier or having to reverse out while your move time slips away. If they need somewhere nearby to hold, tell them to use Garras Wharf, Old Bridge Street or the station car park, all of which take taller vehicles.

Prepare for tight stairs and awkward layouts in older Truro homes

Many period buildings around Lemon Street, Kenwyn Street and the streets above the centre have steep staircases, narrow landings and tight bends. Some flats above shops have rear entrances, coded doors or awkward fire escapes. Larger furniture that fits in modern blocks can struggle here. Walk the route from the street to your front door and note anything tight or awkward. Tell the movers in advance so they bring enough hands or plan for dismantling.

Expect longer walks from the van in newer estates and riverside spots

In Gloweth, Threemilestone and newer estates off the A390, parking courts and shared bays mean the van may stop 30 to 60 metres from your door. Riverside terraces near Malpas and Boscawen Park can be packed on sunny days, leaving the closest space well away from your home. That adds minutes to every trip and can push you over your booked hours. If you know access will be like this, warn your movers so they plan the team and timing properly.
