Things to Know Before Your Doncaster Move

Get a parking permit sorted early

Doncaster’s wardens are quick to ticket, and stopping without permission can lead to a £70 fine. If you need to park longer than 20 minutes or on a restricted street, apply for a temporary parking permit from Doncaster Council at least three working days before your move. It costs around £16.50 per day and protects your van while you load. Our removal companies sort these often, but they’ll need your address and move date to get it approved. Leave it too late and you’ll be hauling boxes while watching for wardens.

Check your van height before picking a car park

Most Doncaster car parks aren’t built for large vans. Frenchgate and Civic Quarter multi-storeys cut off at around 2.1 metres, so taller vans won’t fit. Ask your movers for the van’s height before moving day and choose an open-air car park such as St James Street or Civic Quarter surface parking. It’s safer, cheaper, and avoids getting stuck under a ramp or behind an ANPR barrier after closing.

Watch for traffic on matchdays and race weeks

When Doncaster Rovers play at Eco-Power Stadium, White Rose Way and Lakeside Village back up fast. The St Leger Festival in September brings the same chaos to Bennetthorpe and Leger Way. Always check the fixtures or event calendar before confirming your move date. If it clashes, start early or come in from the opposite side of town. Once queues form, you could be sitting for over an hour.

Avoid retail park fines around Lakeside

Lakeside Village and the surrounding retail parks use ANPR systems that fine anyone who overstays or “leaves site.” If your new home’s nearby, don’t use these car parks to meet your movers or wait for keys. Park in a public car park or on a quiet side street instead. Those retail cameras don’t give warnings, and a single overstay can cost £60 or more.

Steer clear of bus gates on Cleveland Street and Waterdale

These streets look like quick routes into town, but they’re 24-hour bus gates with active cameras. They’re some of the most fined roads in Doncaster. Share a safe route with your movers and anyone following in cars so no one drifts into a penalty zone. Our movers double-check access, but sending a photo of your entrance and postcode helps them avoid turning into a restricted lane by mistake.

Only move through the city centre if you must

Silver Street turns pedestrian-only from 6 pm to 5 am, and Waterdale’s cameras operate all day. Even stopping for a minute gets you fined. If you’re moving into a flat above a shop or bar nearby, plan an early morning slot before 10 am or park at the Civic Quarter car park and walk items in. Our movers know these restrictions well, but confirm which side of the zone your entrance sits on before move day.
